Case Study: North East Metropolitan Language Development Centre, Western Australia

Enhancing language skills through evidence-based intervention

After one year of using LanguageLift, teachers at North East Language Development Centre have noticed students’ confidence has increased, equipping them to understand and follow classroom rules.

The North East Language Development Centre (LDC), based in Perth, is highly regarded for providing evidence-based programs for students up to Year 2 who have been identified as having Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), many of which also come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. North East’s primary focus is the development of oral language skills that are a crucial foundation for literacy, social and academic skills. Its aim is to support students to return to mainstream education as effective communicators who can achieve their full potential.

The North East LDC has used MultiLit’s InitiaLit program since 2020 to ensure the explicit and systematic teaching of phonics and other core literacy skills across the school. The Tier 1 program, coupled with targeted intervention, has lifted student outcomes across the board.

In 2023, North East LDC implemented LanguageLift to provide support for students struggling with language comprehension and oral language. After a year, teachers are already reporting pleasing progress in children’s narrative retelling skills, learning and socialising skills.
