MultiLit’s Principal Research Fellow and Dean of The Academy for the Science of Instruction, Dr Mark Carter, is featured in the EducationHQ article, ‘ ‘Like asking someone to change religion’: expert says cognitive bias at root of education’s bad ideas’, published on 24 March 2025 by Sarah Duggan. He argues that cognitive biases have led to ineffective teaching methods in Australian education. He highlights how deeply ingrained beliefs, like the whole language approach to literacy and the myth of learning styles, persist despite lacking scientific support.
Carter emphasises the need for evidence-based practices to replace these outdated methods, comparing this challenge to changing someone’s religion due to the strong personal identities tied to these educational ideas.
