Maggie Goes to the Museum

Written by Anna Notley, illustrated by Elizabeth Munro

All children deserve a teacher like Mr Coyle to turn learning into the adventure it should be. When Mr Coyle takes his class to the museum, you can be sure everyone will have lots of fun, but Maggie has the most exciting time of all.

Ideal for use with children in Years 1 and 2 (age 5-8). This book has been written to accompany the LanguageLift program, but can also be used independently.

With a make-believe imaginative theme, Maggie Goes to the Museum provides excellent consolidation of narrative story structure. The book has a special focus on an interesting setting of a natural history museum, providing an opportunity to link to history and science discussions. It has more sophisticated vocabulary (e.g. brachiosaurus, moonstone) and figurative language to explore (e.g., crystals as dark as inky night). Less explicit text provides opportunities to work on inferencing skills. You can use this book to discuss:
  • Museums and what they are for
  • Natural history, including dinosaurs, prehistoric man, geology and the insect world
  • What stories your child might imagine about something they see at a museum
