The Martin and Pratt Nonword Reading Test is a simple to administer test of students’ phonological recoding skills: the ability to sound out regular words from their grapheme–phoneme correspondences. Originally published in 2001, the MultiLit Revised Edition includes updated Australian norms on typical performance levels for primary school children aged six to 12.

The Manual includes information on the differences between the two editions, instructions for administration and scoring, psychometric qualities and norms tables.

The Martin and Pratt Nonword Reading Test, created by Frances Martin and Chris Pratt, has been used frequently in both research and classroom settings since its publication as an index of nonword reading ability. Administration of the Martin and Pratt takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes, with items covering the range of phonemes necessary for reading, increasing in difficulty as the test progresses. The Manual for the MultiLit Revised Edition of the test includes recalibrated norms, developed in 2021, information on administering and scoring the test, and the psychometric qualities for the revised version of the test. The original version of the Martin and Pratt Manual, which includes technical information about the development, standardisation and reliability of the test, is available from the MultiLit Members' Area for purchasers of the assessment, together with an audio pronunciation guide.
