The Best Gift

$16.99

Written by Sue Murray, illustrated by Minky Stapleton

This is a touching story about loss, love and what families can do to support each other.

Ideal for use with children in Years 1 and 2 (age 5-8). This book has been written to accompany the LanguageLift program, but can also be used independently. The explicit story and language elements will make it particularly helpful for those struggling with oral language.

The Best Gift provides excellent consolidation of narrative story structure, with a special focus on 'when', using interesting time expressions. It provides opportunities to discuss different kinds of family, love and grief. The book features many time phrases (e.g., On Monday, before school, after dinner), and the funny cat in every picture to engage children with the story. Some less explicit text provides opportunities to work on inferencing skills. Children will relish the colourful illustrations that offer a window into Samoan family culture, as Timi, his mother (and their cheeky cat!) prepare a surprise party for Timi’s grandmother over the course of a week. You can use this book to discuss:
  • The days of the week and weekly routines
  • Losing an older family member, like a grandparent
  • How grief affects us
  • Why love is the best gift
