Where is the WARN?

Readers of the Primary Reading Pledge, released recently by Five from Five, AUSPELD and Learning Difficulties Australia, may have seen a new MultiLit assessment tool mentioned – the WARN.

The Wheldall Assessment of Reading Nonwords (WARN) is a new test that measures young children’s ability to decode nonwords, comprising three Initial Assessment Lists and ten Progress Monitoring Lists. It is a reading fluency measure and takes 30 seconds to administer each list.

It will prove particularly useful for monitoring the progress of Foundation (Kindy) and Year 1 children on InitiaLit. It may also be used to predict likely performance on the Phonics Screening Check so that any necessary intervention may be commenced in good time.

The WARN will be available for shipping from commencement of Term 2 2021. If you would like to register your interest in hearing more about this simple assessment tool when it is ready for launch, please contact us.
