Welcome to the MultiLit Research Unit
The MultiLit Research Unit (MRU) is integral to MultiLit’s approach to innovation and program development.
Led by Dr Robyn Wheldall and founded by Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall AM, the MRU comprises an impressive team of PhD-qualified researchers with extensive expertise in research on effective instructional methods.
Members of MRU conduct, review and discuss scientific investigations into how best to meet the instructional needs of students, with a focus on those who have difficulty learning key foundational skills, such as reading.
The MRU’s work and engagement with the latest international research is essential in the process of embedding evidence into MultiLit’s published programs and resources. It provides a vital link between the current scientific evidence base and its translation into practice.
The MRU works closely with MultiLit’s Literacy Centres, ensuring that the professionals working in these centres receive evidence-based clinical supervision.

The importance of evidence
MultiLit was founded on the philosophy that education practices need to be informed by scientific research to ensure the best outcomes for students.
MultiLit subscribes to the view that this scientific research is continually evolving and expanding. In response to new evidence emerging from either within the MRU or from the international instruction and reading research communities, the recommended instructional approach is evaluated and updated.
This dedication to a data-driven approach, in which evidence for program efficacy is actively sought, ensures that MultiLit programs and assessments are evidence-based and deliver results.
History
Formally established in 2006, the MRU aimed to build upon the work previously conducted as part of the Making Up Lost Time in Literacy (MultiLit) research project at Macquarie University Special Education Centre (MUSEC).
This major research project, founded by Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall AM in 1995, evolved into the independent business MultiLit Pty Ltd, with Professor Wheldall, Dr Robyn Wheldall and Iain Rothwell as co-founders. Since then, MultiLit has continued to develop programs, services and resources grounded in the latest scientific evidence and the effective application of this knowledge through the work of the MRU.
