Six copies of the InitiaLit–Foundation Extension Sounds and Words Book for use during small group rotations after whole-class instruction (each student in the group will need a book). It will assist teachers in providing differentiated learning activities for students who are easily mastering the core reading and spelling literacy skills being taught in InitiaLit–Foundation. The book has four pages for each target sound, providing necessary practice in grapheme-phoneme correspondences, single words and sentences, and offers the following additional challenges:
  • Harder words covering a broader range of skills
  • Longer, more complex sentences and paragraphs
  • A fluency activity featuring the target sounds in commonly used words
  • Vocabulary activities
  • Short imaginative and informative text passages explored through literal and inferential questions, personal and world connections, and simple analogies
  • Follow-up writing tasks.
A downloadable teacher guide accompanies the InitiaLit–F Extension Sounds and Words Book, available from the MultiLit Members’ Area. It contains answer guides, child-friendly definitions, scaffolding tips and suggestions for extra activities. A self-paced workshop, InitiaLit Extension PD by eLearning, provides training in how to use the InitiaLit Extension resources, as well as how to extend capable students in the whole-class program.
