Storybooks
rich literature to support oral language, vocabulary and comprehension
Shared reading of storybooks is an integral part of the PreLit, InitiaLit and LanguageLift programs.
Rich literature introduces children to the joy of reading and storytelling. It also covers a diverse range of topics, exposes children to words and language they might not hear normally in conversation, and teaches children how reading works (left to right, top to bottom).
In this narrative style, the illustrations work with the text so children can ‘read’ the story for themselves before they understand the individual words and decode the text. Storybooks are also useful vehicles for introducing sensitive subjects or talking about values.
The LanguageLift storybooks have been specifically written around specific language features and narrative elements. You can find out more about these here.
